Deuteronomy 16:16-17

16 “Each year every man in Israel must celebrate these three festivals: the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the Festival of Harvest, and the Festival of Shelters. On each of these occasions, all men must appear before the Lord your God at the place he chooses, but they must not appear before the Lord without a gift for him. 17 All must give as they are able, according to the blessings given to them by the Lord your God.

Sharing:  After 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, the Israelites were finally at the east bank of the Jordan River ready to cross into Caanan.  Moses not only told them about the Do's and Don't, but he also told them that they must celebrate every year in these three occasions: first at Passover (March/April), second at Festival of Harvest (Grain harvest in May/June) and lastly at Festival of Shelters (Fruit harvest in Oct) almost for a week each.  Moses made that clear that God wanted them to rejoice (for their ancestor's suffering of Passover), rejoice (for the hard work of harvesting grains) and rejoice (for all the hard work until all grapes are pressed).  Moses told them they must rejoice in their receiving from God, and their returns of service and sacrifice are for God's pleasing.  In here, God wants us to treat our duty as our delight, as well as our enjoyment. It is so true for me in how I treat cooking, raising two young and energetic kids, and for serving my boss on earth and in Heaven.  I learn that I can rejoice more and more if I don't treat duties as rules or laws but treat them as God's sent or God's grace to make us fitter and fitter, or best I do all my "duties" for God.  If we can rejoice all the time, we can help others to rejoice in Him too, no matter what situation they face.   I sincerely hope one day all my friends can attest that they can also make God their joy, so that they can rejoice, rejoice and rejoice in hope based on the solid rock of God's faithful promises.   Can you treat duty as joy?

Luke 9
25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?

Sharing: There are two lessons that I can learn from the verse. The first one is I should not have an incorrect assumption that I can gain the whole world by myself.  The second one is focus on trying to gain the whole world instead of God Himself would lead me to a forfeited life. This reminds me the old saying "to save a little only to lose a lot (因小失大)". In the end, I will be sighing like this “早知如此,又何必當初呢”

This is a good reminder to me – Humble before Him because He is the Lord.

Deuteronomy 9:4-6 4 After the LORD your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, “The LORD has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is going to drive them out before you. 5 It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the LORD your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 6 Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.

Deuteronomy 11:8

Dt 11:8    Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.

Upon meditating this verse, a question arose in my mind: Why does “observing God’s commands” have to do with “gaining strength”? It did take me some time to digest.

Sharing: If fear is defined as “False Evidences Appear Real”, then courage---the opposite of FEAR---can be defined as the "Discernment between falsehood and Truth. The ability to discern from what the false evidences are and what the true evidences are comes from the knowing of the Word (commands) of God. And Jesus said, in order to know my commands, one must observe (進入真理) them first. Hence, a logical connection between “observing Christ’s commands” and “gaining strength” has been established.

Number 32:1-22

1 The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock. 2 So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said, 3 “Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon— 4 the land the LORD subdued before the people of Israel—are suitable for livestock, and your servants have livestock. 5 If we have found favor in your eyes,” they said, “let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan.”.......
20 Then Moses said to them, “If you will do this—if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle 21 and if all of you who are armed cross over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out before him— 22then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free from your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the LORD.

Luke 5:8-11

8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

Sharing:  When the Reubenites and Gadites saw Lord's conquered land so suitable to raise their large herds and flocks, they begged Moses to give that land to them, and do not make them cross the Jordan to Caanan.   Reluctantly, Moses agreed to their request but with one condition that the Reubenites and Gadites must arm themselves before the Lord for battle across the Jordan to drive out their enemies in Cannan first.  Interesting enough that in Luke after Jesus performed the miracle of healing the sick, driving out demons, and catching boat load of fish after Peter the skillful fisherman fished all night with nothing, Jesus always asked everyone to start a new life (told Peter to fish for people) instead of going back to their old life.  I am shameful to admit that God uses these two paragraphs to strike deep in my core to expose my almost unwillingness to cross the Jordan and my slow determination to start a real new life.   Sorry Lord, I am such a sinful man still, please cleanse me deeply and guide me to places that you want me to battle for you and to fish for people.

Numbers 31
9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took
all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder.
15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They
were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites
to be unfaithful to the LORD in the Peor incident, so that a plague
struck the LORD’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every
woman who has slept with a man

The cause of great death in the Israelite camp was neither the
Midianite army nor the curse of Balaam, it was the Midianite women.

are hidden, they entangle our emotions and we desire to make excuses

Luke:2: 52

Lk 2:52    And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

By growing in favor with God and men, we usually interpreted as saying that when Jesus was growing up as a human being, God loved him more and also men would love him more (人見人愛).

We all agreed that God always loves Jesus. But do all men really love Jesus more? Some men do love Him more but others hate him more. In Jesus’ time, the hatred toward Jesus grew more and more until reaching the crescendo of crucifixion.

Campbell Morgan took a different opinion. He thought this phrase should have been translated into “in grace with God and men”.  Luke in 2:40 had already said that God’s grace was with Jesus. The Greek word for “with” is “para” that means that Grace is part of Jesus’ DNA. So when Jesus dealt with God and men, He dealt with both with Grace.

Sharing: It is very important that we should learn from Jesus that we should deal with people with Grace, even they are our adversaries. Billy Graham was right when he said, “If there must be an offense, let it be the offense of the gospel, not the manner in which gospel is presented.

Number 22: 28 & 35
28 Then the LORD opened the donkey’s mouth, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?”
35 The angel of the LORD said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.”
Luke 1:64
64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God.
Psalm  58:1-2
1 Do you rulers indeed speak justly?    Do you judge uprightly among men? 2 No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth.
Proverb 11:12-13
12 A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor,  but a man of understanding holds his tongue. 13 A gossip betrays a confidence,   but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.

Sharing: Today passages are very interesting. We have four passages that echo each other. God opened the donkey mouth. God instructed Balaam what to say about Israelites, to bless and not to curse. God shut the mouth of Zechariah until the birth of his son, John the baptist and then he let out a song of praise to God.  People who rule speak unjustly because their hearts are not right with God. Our words can cause great problems among friends.
My prayer is that God would keep my mouth shut like Zechariah until appointed time and speak only to help others who are lost in their path,  blessing and not curse, praising to God, benefit my neighbors and building up relationship.

Let our mouths totally control by the Holy Spirit.

4 I praise God for what he has promised.

Sharing: As David expressed in these verses, we are facing all kinds of attacks and sufferings in our earthy lives. There are some that we know and some we might not even realize. When we are under attacks or in sufferings, the ultimate hope that we have is our Faith in God's promise. He is the source of strength and courage for us to endure the attacks and sufferings. In Numbers, Chapter 20, the Israelites gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron.  Because Moses and Aaron failed to show strong enough trust in God to honor Him as holy under the attack, they were forfeited the opportunity to enter the land of promise.

Numbers 20
8 “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly
together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out
its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community so
they and their livestock can drink.”
9 So Moses took the staff from the LORD’s presence, just as he commanded him.
10 He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock
and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water
out of this rock?”
11 Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff.
Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.
12 But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in
me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will
not bring this community into the land I give them.”

Sharing: Here the LORD did not tell Moses to strike the rock, HE told him to speak to the rock.  However, Moses was angry and struck the rock twice. As a result, he could not enter the promised land.  This reminds me that I should not complain and I should fully trust in HIM.

Numbers 18:1 The LORD said to Aaron, “You, your sons and your family are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the sanctuary, and you and your sons alone are to bear the responsibility for offenses connected with the priesthood.

Sharing:  A priest not only needs to bring offering to God on behalf of the people, he also needs to bear their offense connected to the sanctuary.  What an awesome and fearful responsibility.  A priest must therefore constantly remind people the meaning of sanctuary and its holiness.  How often we forget and offend the presence of God and forget his holiness.  How easy to forget that our body is the templeand we are called to be priesthood.  Be awe and thankful, for Christ is our great priest.  "We have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin." Number 16:28-35
28 Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things and that it
     was not my idea:
29 If these men die a natural death and suffer the fate of all mankind, then the LORD has not sent me
30 But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them,
with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the realm of the dead, then you will
know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”

31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart

32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households, and all those associated with

    Korah, together with their possessions.

33 They went down alive into the realm of the dead, with everything they owned; the earth closed over

them, and they perished and were gone from the community.

34 At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, “The earth is going to swallow us too!”

35 And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.

Mark 15:25-35

25 It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.

26 The written notice of the charge against him read: THE KING OF THE JEWS.

27 They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left.

[28] [a] 29 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are

going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,

30 come down from the cross and save yourself!”

31 In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved

others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself!

32 Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those

crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus
33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon
34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?"     (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b]
35 When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”

36 Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now

leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.

37 With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

38 The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

39 And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died,[c] he said, “Surely this man

     was the Son of God!”

Sharing: If God could listen to Moses and Aaron, and had a laser-focussed operation to punish 250 of the Korah's Dathan's & Abiram's leaders with death in the midst of thousands of Israelites (Number 16:28-35), and yet God heard His one and only son, Jesus cried out in loud voice "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani" (My God, my God, why have you forsaken me) as if He did not hear him and He painfully let His son, Jesus died in the hand of the wicked.  This contrast of God's power that He chose to execute here makes me pondering about

His soveinty, His Almighty plan, His pain of losing His son in front of His eye, and His unconditional love of all of us.  In here I learn that when one has power to destroy, but chooses not to has even bigger power because his action can lead to building a better and bigger future based on love and forgiveness.  I also learn not to judge someone by their dis-merits but instead by their merits based on the standard of God's word.  Look around, let's find beauty in people we meet, serenity in places we go, and peace, joy and love in our Lord Jesus. PTL.

23 他 们 断 不 得 看 见 我 向 他 们 的 祖 宗 所 起 誓 应 许 之 地 。 凡 藐 视 我 的 , 一 个 也 不 得 看 见 ;

22 not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times--
23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.
24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it.

Sharing: In a seemly hopeless situation, when most people appear to have lost faith, Caleb stood out, because he has a different spirit - he trusts in the Lord and follows Him wholeheartedly. The Lord sees our hearts and knows if we have "a different spirit". Lets our hearts be focused on the Lord.

Numbers
21 But Moses said, “Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, ‘I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!’
22 Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?”
23 The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you.”

Sharing: Moses’ doubtful questioning about whether God can provide meat to the Israelites or not reminds me of my own “near-sighted” problem too – the LORD’s arm is “never” not too short because He is the LORD Almighty. The problem is do I realize that and put my trust upon Him.

Nu 8:23     The LORD said to Moses,

Nu 8:24     "This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or more shall come to take part in the work at the Tent of Meeting,

Nu 8:25     but at the age of fifty, they must retire from their regular service and work no longer.

At the first glance, these three verses are understandable injunctions from the Lord. What makes them eye opening is that when they are compared with other verses elsewhere in the Bible:

Nu 4:3       Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work in the Tent of Meeting.

Ezr 3:8       In the second month of the second year after their arrival at the house of God in Jerusalem, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak and the rest of their brothers (the priests and the Levites and all who had returned from the captivity to Jerusalem) began the work, appointing Levites twenty years of age and older to supervise the building of the house of the LORD.

At what age should the young men of Israel enter into the service of the Lord? One place of the Bible says 20, another place says 30, yet another place (today’s theme verse) says 25. How do we harmonize these differences?

I don’t know. Therefore, I must do some research. Here is the gist of Gleason L. Archer’s answers:

  • From their assignments, the twenty-five to 30 years old young Levites would serve as pupils and probationers, under the superintendence and directions of their senior brethren. There were also chores to be done by these students, such as the upkeep of the tabernacle grounds and the services to the worshippers who came to sacrifice at the altar.
  • Having well trained, they, at the age of thirty and beyond, were admitted to the full discharge of their official function. During these five years training period these young Levites had an opportunity to observe the procedures and guiding principles.
  • In Israelites’ history, there were times when Levites were in shortage, the Lord was flexible to allow younger than 25 years old men to enter into apprenticeship. But too young was not suitable, so around twenty years of age and older was deemed acceptable to enter into public services.

Sharing:

  • Servants of God in the “House of Christ’s Love” must go through training. Be it self-training (for those who are disciplinary and have strong self-motivation), or institutional trainings (attending seminaries or conferences), or humbly doing careful observations of how mature Christians minister church business. Institutional trainings offer additional opportunities to meet people in addition to learning the substance. Trainings take on numerous forms---and have no age limitation. Pick one or two that is suitable for you.
  • Leaders must be flexible to pick workers by judgment and not by rigidly adhering to ages or some other criteria or rules. Leaders by definition must be spiritually mature enough to exercise their latitude. And younger (spiritually speaking) ones must submit to them with humbleness.
  • The older (say, fifty or older) leaders are not to sit around and do nothing as Numbers 8:25 seems to imply at the first sight; their emphasis is shifted from actively “doing” things to a greater role of mentorship and engaging in research for various church issues and spiritual matters. They must encouraging younger ones to equip themselves to become next generation leaders so that the life blood of Christ’s church flows without obstruction and continuously from generations to generations.

Numbers 9
9 Then the LORD said to Moses, 10 “Tell the Israelites: ‘When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body or are away on a journey, they are still to celebrate the LORD’s Passover, 11 but they are to do it on the fourteenth day of the second month at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12 They must not leave any of it till morning or break any of its bones.

Sharing: Not breaking the bones of the sacrificial lamb might actually implying Jesus has no broken bone on the cross. Some of the ritual in the OT often prophesies about Jesus.

Mark 12 :38 As he taught, Jesus said, “Watch out for the teachers of the law. 36 大衛被聖靈感動,說:主對我主說,你坐在我的右邊,等我使你仇敵作你的腳凳。
37 大衛既自己稱他為主,他怎麼又是大衛的子孫呢?眾人都喜歡聽他。
Mark 12:35-37
35 While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, “Why do

37 David himself calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
The large crowd listened to him with delight.
