Sharing: This message reminds us to re-exam ourselves when we serve our Lord. Did we bring God our best, Did we come before Him with pure hearts and clean hearts? Did we serve Him wholeheartedly or just halfheartedly? Did we serve him with the best motivation and attitude? May our service is pleasing in His eyes!

Leviticus 19

1 The LORD also said to Moses,
2 “Give the following instructions to the entire community of Israel. You must be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.
3 “Each of you must show great respect for your mother and father, and you must always observe my Sabbath days of rest. I am the LORD your God.
4 “Do not put your trust in idols or make metal images of gods for yourselves. I am the LORD your God.

Matthew 8
34 Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me.
35 If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake and for the sake of the Good News, you will save it
36 And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
37 Is anything worth more than your soul?
38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashame of them
Psalm 42
5 Why am I discouraged?  Why is my heart so sad?  I will put my hope in God!   I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!

8 But each day the LORD pours his unfailing love upon me,  and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life.

9 “O God my rock,” I cry,  “Why have you forgotten me?  Why must I wander around in grief, oppressed by my enemies?”
10 Their taunts break my bones. They scoff, “Where is this God of yours?”

11 Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad?  I will put my hope in God!  I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!
Proverbs 10:17

17 People who accept discipline are on the pathway to life,  but those who ignore correction will go astray.
Sharing:   The Lord always reminds us that "I am the Lord, your God", and Jesus always tells us that "To be my follower, you must turn your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me."   Even I may still face discouragement,  sadness in my heart, and facing trials from time to time, but I am most encouraged and joyful that I can see clearer and clearer that our Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus will lead me every step of my life.  All I have to do is to follow.  Dear God and dear Savior, please help me to follow you with my Cross, and to accept all your discipline in my daily life.

Mk 6:41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
Mk 6:42 They all ate and were satisfied,
Mk 6:43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
Mk 6:44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
Mk 6:49 but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out,
Mk 6:50 because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."
Mk 6:51 Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed,

Sharing:
After seeing the miracle of the “five loaves of bread and two fish feeding 5000 people”, you would imagine the disciples must have gained tremendous faith. But to our surprise, they did not. When they saw the Lord walking on the lake, they were terrified. Lacking courage is a sign of weak faith. This is a description of me. I pray that God may increase my faith and help me to live a God-dependent life.

Faith leads us to the door of the salvation. Faith also helps us to grow spiritually. In our path of pilgrimage, faith is what we need to reach our destination. Let's pray by faith and ask the Lord for stronger faith in prayer.

Ps 39:9    I was silent; I would not open my mouth, for you are the one who has done this.

Sharing: When to speak and when to be quiet is an art we need to learn in life. Sometimes silence “speaks” volume but other times, we need to speak out. Let’s learn from the wisdom of our Lord Jesus.

As Jesus stood before Pontius Pilate and others who accused Him, His actions were fascinating. With a calmness that unnerves His questioners, He stood silent before them. There are four specific times that Jesus was silent along the trail to His death. Let's look at them.

  • [Mark 14:60]. Jesus was silent when the accusations against Him were wrongful and ridiculous. Jesus was tried before the Sanhedrin, the main judicial council for the Jews. The entire episode before the Sanhedrin was an effort to frame Him. False witnesses gave conflicting testimony. Their charges didn’t add up. Yet Jesus remained silent. Why? Any time evil organized, its fury is like the breath of hell. Nothing can put out the flame. Application: don't waste your breath to answer these ridiculous guys.
  • [Mark 15:5]. Jesus was silent when minds were already made up. When the high priests repeated their charges of Jesus’ alleged treason before Pilate. Jesus was silent a second time. He knew that His opponents were determined to crucify Him, and any words of self-defense would have been pointless, especially since the priests were backed by a crowd just as uninterested in truth. Application: don't waste time on those who are not open up for truth.
  • [Luke 23:8-9, 11-12]. Jesus was silent when people wanted a show---Herod and his band of mockers wanted Jesus to do a miracle on command. This was the third time Jesus said nothing. What a terrifying situation! Many people want Jesus to be nothing more than a miracle worker or an entertainer. And how ironic---enemies became friends out of a shared desire to be rid of Him. Has anything changed since then? Application: The devil sometimes incites you to speak, don’t succumb to its temptation.
  • [John 19:8]. Jesus was silent when His job was done---Pilate became fearful at Christ’s claim to be the Son of God.  He had already told Pilate where He came from. But Pilate didn’t have the courage to deal with His answer. Application: You have done God’s will; your actions have already spoken; there is no point to further persuade.

Absolutely nothing that Jesus could have said would have convinced them of who He really was, or caused them to even care. Since they were unwilling to hear, Jesus was unwilling to speak.

Jesus’ silence was a fulfillment of a prophecy---Isa.53:7. But on the other hand, to those of us who have ears and are willing to hear the truth, Jesus always speaks.

Leviticus 10:1-3

1Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. 2 So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord. 3 And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me, I must be regarded as holy;
And before all the people. I must be glorified.’”

Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man

8  Jesus knew immediately what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you question this in your hearts?
9  Is it easier to say to the paralyzed man ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or ‘Stand up, pick up your mat, and walk’?
10 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man has the authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man and said,
11 “Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home!”
12 And the man jumped up, grabbed his mat, and walked out through the stunned onlookers.
They were all amazed and praised God, exclaiming, “We’ve never seen anything like this before!”
Psalm 35
17 How long, O Lord, will you look on and do nothing? Rescue me from their fierce attacks. Protect my life from these lions!
19 Don’t let my treacherous enemies rejoice over my defeat.  Don’t let those who hate me without cause gloat over my sorrow.
23 Wake up! Rise to my defense!  Take up my case, my God and my Lord.
24 Declare me not guilty, O LORD my God, for you give justice.  Don’t let my enemies laugh about me in my troubles.
28 Then I will proclaim your justice,  and I will praise you all day long.

Ps 33:16  君王不能因兵多得勝;勇士不能因力大得救。{No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength.}

Sharing:

If we do not rely on our own effort in face of insurmountable difficulties in life, then on what should we rely? The answer to this question can be found in the Book of Zechariah:

“不是倚靠勢力,不是倚靠才能,乃是倚靠 (神) 的靈方能成事.” {`Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit.'} (Zec. 4:6)

What a consolation we have as a Christian! If we have to bear all our burdens by ourselves, how burdensome we would have become? But if we know that we have someone who is mighty and merciful, we would have joy and peace even in the midst of unfavorable circumstances.

29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.

The principle of “more will be given to whoever has” teaches us that the more we diligently utilize God-given spiritual gifts, the more we will receive. On the contrary, the less we tried to utilize the spiritual gifts we have, the less we will possess because God is going to take away. This is a principle of God’s kingdom and let’s be reminded that He rewarded those who seek Him earnestly.

Ex 15:22    Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water.

Ex 15:23    When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.)

Ex 15:24    So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "What are we to drink?"

Ex 15:25    Then Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD made a decree and a law for them, and there he tested them.

Mt 22:18    But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, "You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?

Mt 22:19    Show me the coin used for paying the tax." They brought him a denarius,

Mt 22:20    and he asked them, "Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?"

Mt 22:21    "Caesar's," they replied. Then he said to them, "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."

Sharing:

Suffering and evil are realities of this fallen world. They have a spiritual origin: sin. We are made to thirst for fulfillment, we long for what the world offers us, but what we find out is that the worldly water is bitter, like the water of Marah. Nothing can fill our God-shaped void (term used by Saint. Augustine) except God. The only solution to this predicament is the CROSS OF CHRIST. When this piece of wood is thrown into the bitter water of our lives, it transforms them into sweet water.

But the question is how this transformation is to take place existentially in our day-to-day lives? Jesus gives us a hint:

When our Lord was tempted by hypocrites concerning the matter of taxation, He replied by first asking, “Whose portrait is this in this coin?”  Then Jesus replied back their answer, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's.”

Now, if Jesus asks me, “Whose portrait is this in you?” What difference will it make if my answer is “I bear Your image”? If we really bear the image of God, our lives will be sweet even amid bitter circumstances because, for one thing, part of God’s image consists of JOY and PEACE. The purpose of our lives can be found in Genesis 5:1, “When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God” and we are to reflect His image in our lives.

For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.

This is a teaching that Jesus gave to His disciples to have NO doubt in their mind when praying. It is the simplest yet also the most essential part in praying. May God give us the simple faith that we can come before Him without any doubt in our mind.
