Acts 19

8 Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God.
9 But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus.
10 This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

Sharing:
Paul’s experience at Ephesus gives us a good example of how to spread the Gospel. He spoke boldly, argued persuasively, left the obstinate and built up his disciples. In the end, all the Jews and Greeks in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord. That is God’s work through Paul’s participation. What a beautiful picture…

(The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.)

Act 16:27 & 34

27 The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped.

34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole family.

Psalm 143:8-10
8 Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
for to you I lift up my soul.
9 Rescue me from my enemies, O LORD,
for I hide myself in you.
10 Teach me to do your will,
   for you are my God;
may your good Spirit
   lead me on level ground.

Sharing:
Just overnight the jailer went form a suicidal state to a point of being filled with joy. It was because he believed.

So Remember-
When all hopes failed, remember this God's love never fail
When all roads are leading to a dead end, remember this God will show us a way that we can go through.
When we are down and out, remember this God will lifted up our souls.
When we surrounded by our enemies, remember this God will hide us in Him.
Humble ourselves and let God teach us to do Him wills.
Let Him be our God, the center of our lives, the purpose of our lives, the direction of our lives.
He will pour down His Holy Spirit and fill us up and lead us on a path to Him, a level ground and a higher ground.
The dark night will pass. Let each morning be renew in our Lord's unfailing love.

Sharing:  There are a lot of treasures in His Word that can help our daily life.  I learn five lessons today:

1. Don't fight to save your life, just kneel down in front of our Almighty God and be His servant (2 King 1)
2. If you see a brother doing great things for the Lord consistently, maybe we can pray for double share of his spirit and be prepared that one day you can help to spread his work for the Kingdom of God (2 King 2)
3. In our daily life, we should speak out boldly and declare the truth of Christ as our savior (Act 13)
4. Ask God to frequently search our heart, test our thought, point to our offense, and lead us to everlasting life (Psalm 137)
5. In our daily life, minimize quarrels, maintain a pure heart, guide our children to Christ and help them to obey God (Proverb 17)

May God help us to transform our life.

1 Kings 22

7 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no longer a prophet of the LORD here whom we can inquire of?”
8 The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, “There is still one prophet through whom we can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say such a thing,” Jehoshaphat replied.

It is a good reminder to us that we are usually in favor of words we like to hear instead of honest advice. As the saying goes, “忠言逆耳honest advice jars on the ears”.

Psalm 137
1 By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept
   when we remembered Zion.
2 There on the poplars
   we hung our harps,
3 for there our captors asked us for songs,
   our tormentors demanded songs of joy;
they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 How can we sing the songs of the LORD
   while in a foreign land?
5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
may my right hand forget its skill.
6 May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth
if I do not remember you,
if I do not consider Jerusalem
   my highest joy.

Sharing:
The last week was extremely busy for me so I skipped the daily sharing on 6/18 but come across the verses for 6/19 today. Psalm 137 is a hymn expressing the yearnings of the Jewish people in exile following the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in 586 BCE. In foreign land, they keep their faith in the LORD and longed to return to Zion. The exile for Israelite is just like when there is time of difficulty for modern day Christian. We long to see god's help although we seems to be stuck in desperate situations. We yearn for God's help to deliver us from the adverse conditions.

If you are old enough, you might remember this very famous song of it's time. Reply to me if you remember this song to show that I am not the only old guy here! =).

Ac 12:7    Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. "Quick, get up!" he said, and the chains fell off Peter's wrists.

Ac 12:8    Then the angel said to him, "Put on your clothes and sandals." And Peter did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me," the angel told him.

Ac 12:9    Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision.

Sharing: If I were imprisoned and all of a sudden I found that I had an opportunity to escape from the jail cell, I would hurriedly run and leave all things behind. But Peter followed the angel’s instruction; he put on his clothes and sandals, and wrapped his cloak around him and followed the angel’s foot steps without fearing to get caught. God wants us to have faith in Him in moment of emergency and handle things step-by-step without rush to get ahead of God, knowing that He will take care of us

Background:

Ac 10:1    At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion in what was known as the Italian Regiment.

Ac 10:2    He and all his family were devout and God-fearing; he gave generously to those in need and prayed to God regularly.

This centurion did not know Jesus but he had a heart to seek and worship God. In His marvelous wisdom, God prepared Peter to be an evangelist to explain the Gospel to the household of the centurion. But first, Peter’s heart had to be ready. Here is Peter’s own account on how God transformed his heart:

Today’s Scripture:

Ac 11:5    "I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was.

Ac 11:6    I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles, and birds of the air.

Ac 11:7    Then I heard a voice telling me, `Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.

Ac 11:8    "'I replied, `Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.

Ac 11:9    "'The voice spoke from heaven a second time, `Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.

Ac 11:10  'This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again.”

After seeing this vision, Peter was set free from his cultural baggage. He obeyed God and went to see the centurion whose whole family had become Christians upon listening to Peter’s sermon.

Sharing: In any successful evangelism, there are two aspects of the encounter. First, the seeker must have the longing for the Truth. The Bible promises that those who seek will find and those who knock then the door will be opened for him. Second, the evangelist must have the willingness to be taught. Peter was willing to put away his tradition to accept Jesus’ instructions, even though those instructions did not conform to his reasoning and ethnic custom

1 Kings 18:21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing.
38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. 39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD—he is God! The LORD—he is God!”
Psalm 135: 5 I know that the LORD is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods. 6 The LORD does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.

Sharing: After three-and-a-half-year famine, the people of Israel said nothing when Elijah asked them "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him." But when all people saw the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice Elijah offered, they fell prostrate and cried, "The Lord-he is God".  What a people of living by sight, not by faith!

The psalmist in Psalm 135 told us that he knew that the Lord is great and the Lord does whatever pleases Him. May we also have such faith in the Lord and know that the Lord is great no matter what circumstances we are in or how long we have been waiting for our Lord to answer our prayers. THE LORD DOES WHATEVER PLEASES HIM, IN THE HEAVENS AND ON THE EARTH, IN THE SEAS AND ALL THEIR DEPTHS.

any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a
jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for
myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”
13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have
said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have
and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.
14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of
flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until
the day the LORD sends rain on the land.’”
15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food
every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family.

1 Kings 13:33-14:2
33 Even after this, Jeroboam did not change his evil ways, but once more appointed priests for the high places from all sorts of people. Anyone who wanted to become a priest he consecrated for the high places. 34 This was the sin of the house of Jeroboam that led to its downfall and to its destruction from the face of the earth.
1 At that time Abijah son of Jeroboam became ill, 2 and Jeroboam said to his wife, “Go, disguise yourself, so you won’t be recognized as the wife of Jeroboam. Then go to Shiloh. Ahijah the prophet is there—the one who told me I would be king over this people.

What a shameful spiritual condition Jeroboam has brought Israelite into.  Wrong things can be done in public, and yet what is right, which is seeking advice from a prophet, needs to be done in secrete.  Absolute power corrupts absolutely; because he abused his power, Jeroboam has made this nation unable to tell right from wrong any more.  He used worldly manner to handle spiritual matters.  Whoever wished to be a priest, Jeroboam allowed and appointed him to be so.  Surely this will make Jeroboam popular, but he neglected the high law and set a bad example.

1 King 14:7-9
7 Go, tell Jeroboam that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel,
says: ‘I raised you up from among the people and made you a leader
over my people Israel. 8 I tore the kingdom away from the house of
David and gave it to you, but you have not been like my servant David,
who kept my commands and followed me with all his heart, doing only
what was right in my eyes. 9 You have done more evil than all who
lived before you. You have made for yourself other gods, idols made of
metal; you have provoked me to anger and thrust me behind your back.

Sharing:
God raised up Jeroboam to lead the other kingdom of Israel but he
turned away from God and made himself idols to worship. Putting Idols
in front of us instead of God and thrusting God behind our backs are
the two major sins that God hates. Sometime we may not putting an idol
in the front but thrusting God behind our backs. We have to remember,
always put God first and he is only in the front never behind us.

1 King 11: 9-13
9 The LORD became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. 10 Although he had forbidden Solomon to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the LORD’s command. 11 So the LORD said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates. 12 Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”

Acts 9
13 "Lord," Ananias answered, "I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem.
14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name."
15 But the Lord said to Ananias, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel.
16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name."
17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Sharing: Ananias only played a supporting role in this episode, but he played the role faithfully. What he did may be insignificant, but with his action, Paul was able to see again. Anyone of us could be called upon by the Lord to do His work at any time. We must be prepared to carry out the assignment faithfully.

1 King 8

56 “Praise the Lord who has given rest to his people Israel, just as he promised. Not one word has failed of all the wonderful promises he gave through his servant Moses.57 May the Lord our God be with us as he was with our ancestors; may he never leave us or abandon us. 58 May he give us the desire to do his will in everything and to obey all the commands, decrees, and regulations that he gave our ancestors. 59And may these words that I have prayed in the presence of the Lord be before him constantly, day and night, so that the Lord our God may give justice to me and to his people Israel, according to each day’s needs. 60 Then people all over the earth will know that the Lord alone is God and there is no other. 61 And may you be completely faithful to the Lord our God. May you always obey his decrees and commands, just as you are doing today.”

62 Then the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices to the Lord.

Sharing: It is inspiring to read 1 King 8 about how King Solomon prayed to God.  In spite of human's sinful nature, and subsequent separation from God time and time again, new King Solomon first praised the Lord of keeping His promises of not failing even once.  he prayed day and night that God would not leave or abandon them (forgiveness every time) and asked God to give them the desire (from His Words and Holy Spirit) to do His will and to obey all His commands, so God would always give justice (blessings and punishments) to him and to his people.  It is only until then that people all over the earth will know that our one and only God always glorifies Himself through His people who draw strength on Him despite of ALL of our weaknesses and sins.  In conclusion, we must be totally faithful to the Lord our God, and always obey His decrees and commands from the Bible, and if ever we fail and fall, we must repent and turn towards God, otherwise our separation from God will lead us to fearsome consequences.    Let's pray for each other like Solomon did, and help each other if any one of us has failed or fell.  Don't lead God, but let God leads us.  Don't be fearless, but be most fearful to God's separation from us.   Please always leads us to You.

26 The woman whose son was alive was deeply moved out of love for her
son and said to the king, “Please, my lord, give her the living baby!
Don’t kill him!”
But the other said, “Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!”
27 Then the king gave his ruling: “Give the living baby to the first

Acts 5
3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?
9 Peter said to her, “How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look! The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.”
29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than men!
32 We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.”

What a transformation Peter had after being filled with Holy Spirit. Peter plainly pointed out that untruthful offering is lying to the Holy Spirit not to man.  He boldly testified for the Lord without fear, even he had been threatened by the authorities.  Peter was sensitive to the Holy Spirit and he obeyed the leading of the Holy Spirit.  He is truly an example to us all.  We all have the dwelling of the Holy Spirit when we accepted Christ as our Lord.  May we learn from Peter to be obedient and sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit.

Pr 16:25 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

While the rebellious humanity clinches their fists to protect the exclusivity of God’s One Way, they invent their own way. But the most horrible thing is that this human way “seems right” to the unregenerate men but leads men to incalculable tragedy. The outcome of blind-lead-blind is predictable. It is even a laughable irony if the phrase “a way” here means “ONE way”.

Having commented on this, I can’t help but to refer to yesterday’s verse:

Ac 4:12    Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.

When reading Acts 4:12, it brings to mind another parallel verse:

Jn 14:6     Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Peoples of other worldviews protest these two verses by saying: “It is offensive to claim Jesus is the only way to God.”

Few points can be made to defend the biblical position and point out the falsity of such counter perspective.

Point #1:

Let us first look at this simple conversation:

  • Exclusivist, in making a Truth Claim, declares: “I am right; you are wrong.”
  • Pluralist, in the name of tolerance, makes a different Truth Claim: “You and I are both right.”

Pluralist, in effect, says, “If you don’t agree on my claim that “You and I are both right” then you are wrong.”

Can you see now? Pluralism is just a convoluted form of exclusivity. It excludes the Exclusivist.

Point#2:

What is implicit in John 3:16 is the exclusivity of Jesus’ truth. But do we notice that Jesus showed all of us the inclusiveness of His love for the whole world?

Point#3:

In Christianized nations, one can openly criticize Christianity. But in nations of other religions, one may put yourself and your family in great jeopardy if you criticize their state-religions. Who show more tolerance?

Point#4:

Truth has to be exclusive. Making this Truth Claim is equivalent to the affirmation of the basic law of logic: The Law of non-contradiction.

This law cannot be denied. The moment you deny it, you immediately affirm it. There is no way to get around this.

  • (A)=/=(-A)       Law of non-contradiction (=/= means “can not be equal to”).
  • -[(A)=/=(-A)]    Negative sign in front means the “denial of this Law.”
  • (-A)=/=(A)       Same as the first equation: Negation results in affirmation.

Point#5:

Claiming exclusivity is one thing, whether your Truth Claim holds water is yet another. The validity of the biblical claims (Acts 4:12 and John 14:6) is sustained by the uniqueness of Christ, the uniqueness of the Bible, the existential coherency, and the historical reliability of the Scripture.

Point#6:

Considering the gross depravity of humanity, we should not complain why there isn’t more than one way through them we can go to God. Rather, we should be thankful that God, in light of our lostness, still preserve one way for us to go to Him. To criticize this “one-way” injunction is an act of ingratitude which further confirms our sinfulness and rebellions.

Act 3
1 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer—at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.
6 Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God.

Sharing:

This is a psalm of ascending. The psalmist starts from “lift up” his eyes to the LORD, who is the maker of heaven and earth, to seek help. Oftentimes, our eyes did not lift up high enough to see how great our God is – what we see is the worldly problem and it is so big that we forget that He is there and He is the LORD. Let’s be reminded that we are His children and, He cares us and He is full of grace.

John 20

8 Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9 (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”  16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means “Teacher”).

20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Sharing: There are four kinds of faith shown in John 20. First are those who saw and believed, though they still did not understand from the Scripture.(vv. 8-9) Second is the one who couldn't recognize the Lord because of great sorrow inside until hearing the words of the Lord, who then believed and got comforted.(vv. 15-16) Third is the one who experienced and saw the Lord and were overjoyed because of their faith.(v. 20) The last are those who have not seen and yet have believed, whom Jesus called blessed. In our journey of faith, we'll continuously encounter different challenges. All kinds of faith may still give us hope to walk through our journey, nevertheless, blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.

John 21
21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”
23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

Sometimes God's word is plain and simple but we would like to add our own preference and form our own  interpretation.
