Daniel 5

22 “You are his successor, O Belshazzar, and you knew all this, yet you have not humbled yourself. 23 For you have proudly defied the Lord of heaven and have had these cups from his Temple brought before you. You and your nobles and your wives and concubines have been drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone—gods that neither see nor hear nor know anything at all. But you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny! 24 So God has sent this hand to write this message.

25 “This is the message that was written: Mene, Mene, Tekel, and Parsin.
26 This is what these words mean:Mene means ‘numbered’—God has numbered the days of your reign and has brought it to an end.
27 Tekel means ‘weighed’—you have been weighed on the balances and have not measured up.
28 Parsin[d] means ‘divided’—your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”

29 Then at Belshazzar’s command, Daniel was dressed in purple robes, a gold chain was hung around his neck, and he was proclaimed the third highest ruler in the kingdom.30 That very night Belshazzar, the Babylonian king, was killed.  31 And Darius the Mede took over the kingdom at the age of sixty-two.

Sharing:  Oh dear Lord, thanks for sending me the message "Mene, Mene, Tekel, and Parsin".   My days are numbered, and you have weighed me and divided my "kingdom".  May you lead me to serve you while you still give me the breathing room.   Thank you, Lord.  I am here.

28 All this happened to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 Twelve months later, as the king was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, 30 he said, “Is not this the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power and for the glory of my majesty?”  31 Even as the words were on his lips, a voice came from heaven, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. 32 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.”

Human is forgetful and proud, especially when he / she is on the high position or having high achievements. From Daniel 2 we saw King Nebuchadnezzar received the interpretation of his dream and recognized that Daniel’s God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings (2:47). Then, we saw the forewarning of his outcast for 7 times in the 2nd dream interpreted in Daniel 4. 12 months later, however, he still claimed that he built the great Babylon without recognizing who is the sovereign God. What a warning and reminder to us!

Today, the world is also full of all kinds of luxuries. Have we ever resolved not to defile ourselves with the luxuries of this world, which will detract us from our relationship with our Lord?

Eze 47:1  The man brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.

Eze 47:2  He then brought me out through the north gate and led me around the outside to the outer gate facing east, and the water was flowing from the south side.

Eze 47:3  As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and then led me through water that was ankle-deep.

Eze 47:4  He measured off another thousand cubits and led me through water that was knee-deep. He measured off another thousand and led me through water that was up to the waist.

Eze 47:5  He measured off another thousand, but now it was a river that I could not cross, because the water had risen and was deep enough to swim in--a river that no one could cross.

Spiritual growth is a steady step-by-step process---starting with ankle-deep, then knee-deep, then body-deep. God said to the Israelites, “Little by little I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land. (Exodus 23:30).” God’s process for His people to possess the land was conditioned upon their readiness, and He would not lead them beyond it. Readiness qualifies a person for the task. God had said He would not drive out the inhabitants “in a single year” because this would exceed Israel’s readiness capability. Possessing the land would be a developing process---“little by little”---over time. Seeking quick success and instant benefits (急功近利) simply doesn’t work and oftentimes leads to failure.

  • We want results without effort.
  • We want a lifestyle, but we don’t really know what life is about.
  • We want success without having to pay the price to get there.
  • We want straight A’s (考100分), but we don’t want to study.
  • We want blessed marriage, but we don’t want the effort and communication that it takes.

By perseverance, they say, the snail reached the ark. Walt Disney, for example, went bankrupt prior to the success of Disney World and Epcot. Christian business man Jack E. Shaw in his book “Little by Little” gave us the following instructions for the pursuit of spiritual progress:

  • Don’t give up.
  • Pay attention to details.
  • Pay the price.
  • Don’t shortcut.
  • Don’t circumvent.
  • Be thorough.
If you think your church is not growing, it is because she is not ready. If she is ready, she must grow. Let us build us up with a steadfast and sure-footed process and let the Holy Spirit set our pace.

14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each man’s work impartially, live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. 22 Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

I don’t know if you ever have such regret for something you have said or done. I myself would oftentimes run into such situation. Then the question is can I have a 2nd chance to make up after I made the mistake.  Usually it is not an option because damage has been made. The above two verses actually give me a lot of encouragement because in God’s kingdom, I know I can approach our Lord with confidence – to ask for His forgiveness and mercy.

Ezekiel 20

30 “Therefore, give the people of Israel this message from the Sovereign Lord: Do you plan to pollute yourselves just as your ancestors did?

43 You will look back on all the ways you defiled yourselves and will hate yourselves because of the evil you have done. 44 You will know that I am the Lord, O people of Israel, when I have honored my name by treating you mercifully in spite of your wickedness. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!”

Hebrews 9

Christ Is the Perfect Sacrifice

11 So Christ has now become the High Priest over all the good things that have come. He has entered that greater, more perfect Tabernacle in heaven, which was not made by human hands and is not part of this created world. 12 With his own blood—not the blood of goats and calves—he entered the Most Holy Place once for all time and secured our redemption forever.

13 Under the old system, the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow could cleanse people’s bodies from ceremonial impurity. 14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. 15 That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.

24 For Christ did not enter into a holy place made with human hands, which was only a copy of the true one in heaven. He entered into heaven itself to appear now before God on our behalf. 25 And he did not enter heaven to offer himself again and again, like the high priest here on earth who enters the Most Holy Place year after year with the blood of an animal. 26 If that had been necessary, Christ would have had to die again and again, ever since the world began. But now, once for all time, he has appeared at the end of the age[g] to remove sin by his own death as a sacrifice.

27 And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment, 28 so also Christ died once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.

Psalm 107

Book Five (Psalms 107–150)

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!

2 Has the Lord redeemed you? Then speak out!
Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.

22 Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving

43 Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the LORD.

Sharing: When we heed the things that God has done for us and ponder the loving deeds of God, we will naturally want to give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for us. The one who doesn't heed the things God has done and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord is not wise and will easily forget God's grace. Let's be the one who is wise and thankful.

Ezekiel 18
21 “But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die. 22 None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live. 23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?

Psalm 106
13 But they soon forgot what he had done
and did not wait for his counsel.
14 In the desert they gave in to their craving;
in the wasteland they put God to the test.
15 So he gave them what they asked for,
but sent a wasting disease upon them.

Soon after God delivered the Israelite out of Egypt, they forgot about what God has done for them.  They complained about the physical condition they were in, they grumbled and demanded for more food, water and power to satisfy their carnal desire.  God then granted their wishes and they suffered the consequences greatly.  What a dreadful spiritual condition many of God’s people might fall into it even today.  If we don’t know how to count God’s blessing and reflect upon his guidance in a regular bases, we too will forget about his grace and complain about the situations we are in and even put God to the test.  Let us learn to count God’s blessing one by one and we will realize the true counsel we need to seek is his will.

Ezekiel 9  9 He answered me, “The sin of the house of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice. They say, ‘The LORD has forsaken the land; the LORD does not see.’ 10 So I will not look on them with pity or spare them, but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done.”

Hebrews 5   13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Psalm 105    4 Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.15

13 凡 只 能 吃 奶 的 都 不 熟 練 仁 義 的 道 理 , 因 為 他 是 嬰 孩 ;

12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Sharing:
It is a very good reminder to me – need to strive for maturity in the truth of God’s word in order to distinguish good from evil because the days are evil, as Apostle Paul indicated.

Hebrew 4:14
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Sharing:
In the time of trial and difficulties, we need to do the following:
1. Hold firmly to the faith- that we are saved by death of Jesus Christ
2. Approach the throne with confidence- that He knows our weakness and our suffering.
3. receive mercy- we did not received the punishment that we should have.
4. Find Grace to help us in our time of need- grace that we are not desert to have and yet He abundantly giving us in the time of need.
When we are down and out and feeling all things are lost, let us come to the throne of grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ezekiel 1:3 the word of the LORD came to Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians. There the hand of the LORD was on him.
Ezekiel 3:3 Then he said to me, “Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach with it.” So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth.
Ezekiel 3:7 But the people of Israel are not willing to listen to you because they are not willing to listen to me, for all the Israelites are hardened and obstinate.

Sharing: From Ezekiel chapter 1 to 3 we see that Ezekiel is a big contrast to the people of Israel regarding their responses toward the word of God. The word of the Lord came to Ezekiel by the Kebar River in the land of the Babylonians, and the word of the Lord was spoken to the Israelites by Ezekiel sent by the Lord. Both of them heard God's word. Yet, Ezekiel was submissive to God's word and enjoyed it as sweet as honey as the Israelites rejected God's word and remained hardened and obstinate. The end result was that Ezekiel was a man with God's spirit upon him, and the Israelites were a group of people without the big shepherd since God's spirit left the sanctuary in Jerusalem. May we learn from this lesson and be willing to listen and submissive to God's word.

Sharing: It is interesting to read these two paragraphs together. Lamentations tells you how much suffer that the Israelis had endured because of their rebelliousness, while Psalm praises God as He is the merciful God. These two sound contradictory to each other. Actually, the two things that link these two aspects together are one: God's grace and two: Israelis' repent.

Titus 1:15-16

Tit 1:15    To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.

Tit 1:16    They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.

My prayer: O Lord, make me a pure vessel so I may follow your will. Cleanse my actions so that they can measure up with your gracious calling. Dear Lord, thank you for reminding
