Proverbs 6:12-15
12 A troublemaker and a villain,
who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13 who winks maliciously with his eye,
signals with his feet
and motions with his fingers,
14 who plots evil with deceit in his heart—
he always stirs up conflict.
15 Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;
he will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.

Exodus 12
8"You shall tell your son on that day, saying, 'It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.'
9"And it shall serve as a sign to you on your hand, and as a reminder on your forehead, that the law of the LORD may be in your mouth; for with a powerful hand the LORD brought you out of Egypt.
14"And it shall be when your son asks you in time to come, saying, 'What is this?' then you shall say to him, 'With a powerful hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, from the house of slavery.
16"So it shall serve as a sign on your hand and as phylacteries on your forehead, for with a powerful hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt."

 18 他 說 : 甚 麼 誡 命 ? 耶 穌 說 : 就 是 不 可 殺 人 ; 不 可 姦 淫 ; 不 可 偷 盜 ; 不 可 作 假 見 證 ;

Psalm 22:1-31

Ps 22:1    My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from the words of my groaning?

Ps 22:6    But I am a worm and not a man,

Ps 22:22  I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will praise you.

Ps 22:26  The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the LORD will praise him-- may your hearts live forever!

Sharing:

If verse 1 is a prophecy, its fulfillment is in the Gospel: About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" --which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:48).

Pondering upon verse 1, a truth came into sharp focus: The moment when Jesus cried those words happened at the height of his loneliness and physical suffering yet it was also the moment when he underwent the very center of his father’s will.

It is inevitable that we may suffer from time to time unjustifiably. At those occasions, let us not complain but think of Jesus. He is the most Holy One and yet He also endured suffering even when he obeyed His Father’s will to the fullness. Can we ever honestly say that we have followed God’s will to the full extend while our suffering can never be comparable to Jesus’ spiritual alienation from His Father?

Verse 6 is equally amazing. The word “worm” in Hebrew means “scarlet” or “crimson” as found in Isaiah 1:18.

"Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”

When we are in the midst of suffering, we are often preoccupied with our pain and lose sight of the reason why God put us in that situation. Jesus had a very clear self-understanding knowing His mission was to bear the scarlet sins of mankind. Let us use our suffering as an opportunity to glorify our Lord.

In times of our adversities, we must learn from the Psalmist. Fix our eyes on Jesus and turn our painful experience into redemptive actions by telling the world the Good News of salvation as told in verse 22. This mission mindedness will transform our pain of forsakenness into joy and hope if we are willing to seek the Lord and praise Him as declared in verse 26.

Matthew 11:18-19
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.”

Sharing: Jesus enjoyed eating and drinking and they say he is a glutton and a drunkard.  But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.  Let's have wisdom, humble ourselves, respect and learn from God's servants, spiritual brothers and sisters.  It will help us build up the healthy Body.

Proverb 3: 19-20
19: By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place;
20: by his knowledge the deeps were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.
Sharing: One of the internal evidences that point to the proposition that “the Bible is the Word of God” is the amazing continuity and consistency within the Bible texts. The very first verse of the very first book of the Bible declares “God created the heavens and the earth.” Such declaration has never been called in question throughout the entire Bible; instead, it is affirmed over and over again by hundreds of verses and these two verses are examples out of many.

The Hebrew word for “creation” is BARA which means “the power which causes something into being from nothing.” This creatoral power is not a blind force but the kind with a MIND behind it.

Hebrew philosophy holds the view that behind substance is an abstraction. In other words, thoughts must precede phenomena. Blind force could not create but destroy. Creatoral force is guided and constrained by wisdom and will. Wisdom and will point to the mind, and the mind points to the Personhood. The words “wisdom” and “understanding” and “knowledge” in these two verses are conveying this critical concept.

With this understanding, we come to the realization that we are really the blessed ones: We are created after the mind and image of God---we are special in His creation. We are not material-plus-time-plus-chance which offers no meaning in life. On this Sunday morning, let us go to church with a joyous anticipation to bow down and worship our Creator who has given us meaning and dignity in our beings.

Sharing: Jacob's story wakes me. God blessed Jacob before he was born. God already said to Rebekah “Two nations are in your womb. The older will serve the younger. But because of Jacob sinful natural he wanted to do it his own way. Even the bible says that he was deceitful. Rebekah loved Jacob more than Esau but she did not teach Jacob to seek God's way. Jacob cheated Esau for his first born birth right and also his father’s blessing. Rebekah never saw Jacob again even when she died. God also used Laban to teach Jacob.

Genesis: 28: 20-22

20: Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear

21: so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the LORD will be my God

22: and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”

Psalm: 11: 3-4

3: When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?”

4: The LORD is in his holy temple; the LORD is on his heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; his eyes examine them.

Sharing: Jacob cheated his way for his father’s blessing and running away from home.  In his most difficult time, God appeared to him and gave him his promise to protect him. Not like his grandfather Abraham, Jacob still bargaining with God. Trying to make a deal with God by setting up a stone as a pillar(foundation) of God’s house. When our world turns upside down and the foundations and fabric of human relationship are being destroyed, what can we do?  Learn from David, take refuge in the Lord and rely on Him and His words. God observes everyone and examines all of us. He knows.

Genesis 12:10-13:

10Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.

11As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "I know what a beautiful woman you are.

12When the Egyptians see you, they will say, `This is his wife. 'Then they will kill me but will let you live.

13Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you."

Sharing:  Sara was the wife of Abraham, first mentioned in Genesis 11:29. According to Genesis 20:12, she was Abraham’s half-sister, the daughter of his father, but not of his mother. Her name was originally Sarai. (Ref.: “The New Compact Bible Dictionary”.) The question is: Did Abram really told the truth when he told the Egyptians that Sara was his sister? The answer is: Yes, his statement was factual but Abram knew for himself that he had the intent to mislead the Egyptians.

Now we know that Truth is more than just a factual declaration, it must be accompanied with correctly understood motives. Otherwise, it is not the "truth” but a “half-truth”. A half-truth is same as half-lie. A girl is either pregnant or not pregnant, there is no such thing as “half-pregnant”, so a half-lie is a lie.

C.S. Lewis told a metaphor about the sailing orders given to the captains of a fleet of ships. I think they can relate to ethics.

  1. The ships must know how to avoid bumping into each other---We must not do things that may hurt people.
  2. They must know how to stay shipshape and avoid sinking---We must have a clean conscience before God.
  3. And most important of all, they must know why the fleet is at sea in the first place---What we really intent to do or say must be made plain to people and must not mislead people.

(Ref.: “The Real Face of Atheism” by Ravi Zacharias; pages 54-55.)

Therefore, Truth = Fact + Intent.

I'm touched by today's verses from Gen. 1:2-3.

2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
